AdSense Launch Video Units
AdSense have today announced their long awaited Video Units.
This is what enternetusers broke the news about last week. It allows you to get video content for your blog with an embedded ad using YouTube ‘partner content’ on your blog.
Basically you set up a video unit to run on your blog and either choose a category of video to be targeted to your blog, select a content provider to provide the video or leave it completely up to AdSense and Youtube to do it for you. You also get to customize the video unit to blend into your site in terms of color and size.
The AdSense blog say that you can log into your AdSense account to start using this - but I’m yet to see the option yet so haven’t yet tested it - but it looks like a useful option that will suit those of you wanting to play with video.
The only negative that I see is that you can’t choose specific video to show on your blog. You can target videos from one provider - but it could end up serving anything from that provider.
More information on these new AdSense video units can be seen at the AdSense Help Center and on the Inside AdSense Blog.
Here’s how an AdSense Video Unit looks:
Update - Turns out that this is only available for US publishers with sites in English

Blogging Ethics and Sponsored Reviews
This post on Blogging Ethics and Sponsored Reviews has been submitted by Travel Blogger - Melissa Petri from Europe String.
With the increasing number of people turning to blogs, it is no surprise that companies have also started recognizing its use as powerful marketing tools. And apart from just helping to spread the word, blogs can also serve as a way to communicate directly with would-be consumers.
Among others, the travel industry has seen the light. They now know better. Some - like Southwest and several travel aggregators - established their own blogs to reach out. Others, on the other hand, sought the audience of established individual or network travel bloggers.
Like travel writers from influential newspapers and magazines, travel bloggers are now being approached (at a smaller scale) to join travel junkets, receive freebies and/or get paid for sponsored reviews.
Now, if YOU - as a travel blogger - decide to accept these travel freebies, how can you make sure that you do not sell out and that you remain ethical?
Be Transparent. Always inform your readers that you are writing a sponsored review and/or that you have received certain items to review for free. Especially if you write a glowing review, your readers deserve to know that you are being paid for what you are writing.
Try to Avoid ‘Only Positive Reviews’. If you are going to properly evaluate a certain product or service, you need to write both the pros and the cons. Yes, even if you are little miss sunshine and would rather focus on the positive, your readers need to know if there is one aspect which is lacking or which may be of concern to other travelers.
If You Get a Giveaway, Give it Away. At least, you can try. The best way, in my opinion, is to hold a contest and give the giveaway away. Provided, of course, that it can still be used after evaluation of the product. In my opinion, this is a win-win situation. You will encourage reader participation, make one winner happy and your ìadvertiserî will get an extra giveaway or contest entry. AND if you have something considerably big to giveaway, you can even generate more traffic.
Travel junkets are trickier, though. Even if you promise to be true to your readers, how realistic would your experience be? I can safely assume that most of these companies would go all out because they know that you would be writing about your experiences later. You’ll get special treatment, the best rooms, the best food and I bet that you would not have to fall in line, either. Even if you write a glowing review because you’ve had this truly wonderful travel experience, do you think you would you still be true to your readers? Would your experience and your recommendation really reflect the kind of package they are really offering to normal travelers? Something to make you go hmmm…… Told you, it’s tricky.
Many say that the judgements of travel bloggers who accept freebies are compromised. Well, your readers would have to be the judge of that. The important thing is that YOU do not become a travel whore (excuse my language). YOU should not accept any sponsorship or freebie offers if they do allow you to be transparent and write negative reviews, if any.
Melissa Petri writes for 4 network travel blogs. Her day job allows her to travel 25x a year, written off as travel expense and/or courtesy of the miles she has accrued through the years. She admits to occasionally accepting giveaway (to be later given away in her blogs).

The Party is Over - One Last Giveaway
Oh My Goodness - our 3rd Birthday Prize Bonanza is over (well it will be shortly - because there’s one more giveaway that all of you can enter below).
Over the last week we’ve given away over $54,000 in prizes (in fact it’s been closer to $60,000 because we added a few prizes and underestimated the value of a few others).
Before I announce the last giveaway - I want to take a moment to acknowledge the hard work and generosity of a few people.
Project Coordinator, Lara Kulpa - Lara Kulpa from Anubis Marketing has gone so far above and beyond the call this week that I can’t express to you how hard she’s worked. Lara has had significantly less sleep than she normally would this week and has managed over 100 sponsors, tens of thousands of entries as well as me (no mean feat on that last one). The project was much bigger than I ever expected it to be and Lara has taken it in her stride. If you’re ever in the market for someone to help you with web design, internet marketing or SEO - do consider Lara Kulpa from Anubis Marketing (PS: subscribe to her blog here).
Our Sponsors have been wonderful. When we decided to go with over 100 prizes I literally began to shake as I began to think about the complexity of the task. Not only has Lara been great at helping us with the coordination of everything - our sponsors have been incredibly patient and generous with us. Of all the sponsors only on one occasion have we had any issues resulting in a sponsor pulling out (and that seems to have been a miscommunication - I substituted a cash prize in for the person who won that prize) - everyone else has been incredible! Please do visit some of our sponsors today as a thank you to them. If you won a prize it’d also be great if you’d link up to them as a thank you.
Here they are once again:
Help Desk Geek - Holiday for Every Day - Home Based Holidays - I Hate Bad Service - Intricate Art - iPod Repair of Memphis - It’s Write Now - JCM Enterprises - Jer Games - Jewel Caddy - Jill Koenig - Kim and Jason - Kirsty Dunphey - speaker, author, entrepreneur, retired at 27 - Leisure Lab - Lille Punkin’ Reviews - Lisa Marie Dias Designs - Lulu - Magic Vacation Villas - Mary Jo Rulnick - Mederma for scars - Melissa Roberts - Meryl Evans - Content Maven - Mighty Mugs - Mike Cavaroc - Million Dollar Pet Pix - Morris Green Clean - Nathan Rice - NetLink Web - Nika’s Culinaria - No Full Stop - Olive Oil Passion - On Target Media Group - Organize & Simplify - Organized Outcomes - Milo - Personal Self Defense - Publicity Hound - Raven’s Roads - Remarkable Communication - Retreat and Heal - Sea Slugs! Anime Blog - Secure Delivery - SeekZap - SEO Aware - SEO Book - Simple Kind Of Life - SKY FM Radio - SmallFuel Marketing - Soy Coffee - StarFeeder - Stogie Review - Street Smart Marketing - Tamra Engle - Tea Party Girl - The Bargain Queen - The Collecting Life - The Essentials of Trading - the Palmetto Guesthouse - The WellCenter Group - Tim “Gonzo” Gordon - Time For Coffee and Tea - Treo Today - Truffle Tree - Viral Electronics - Wall Street Fighter - Zach Everson - [Geeks are Sexy] Technology News - 1 Cool File - Angela Wills - Another Old Movie Blog - Artisan’s Cup (Teas) - Associated Content - Author Media Training - Babble Soft - Back in Skinny Jeans - Barefoot Parties - Baz - Best Hawaii Vacation Blog - Better Wallpaper - Blog About Your Blog - Blog Louder - BlogFlux - Blogging Fingers - Blogging Tips - Blogging With Cents - Book Test Online - BVT Products - Center of Muse - Cheap Shooter - Chitika - Christina Perdue - Color Themes - Contest Blogger - Contest Queen - Cory Miller - David Airey - Derek Beauchemin - DisplayLink - distilled: pure website expertise - Egg Marketing Blog - Explore Life Blog - Fashionista TV - Free Money Finance - Freelance Writing Jobs - Freezing Hot - Geeky Speaky - Genealogy Reviews Online - Good Doggie - Groovy Vegetarian - Grown Up Geek
Readers - lastly I want to thank each and every person who participated in this last week whether they linked up, entered or patiently stood by and patiently allowed the craziness to take over enternetusers for the last few days. Without your participation this event would have been boring. I was overwhelmed by the responses of many of you - some of you brought me to tears (in laughter) at your entries and I wish that I had more prizes to give away to reward you all.
While this competition was about celebrating the last 3 years of enternetusers and creating a little buzz around this blog - ultimately it was my attempt at giving something back to you the enternetusers reader community. enternetusers.net is really nothing without those who read and participate in it - I hope you enjoyed this past week as much as I have.
One final Giveaway for Everyone (well 3000 of you)
OK - I promised one more giveaway. This one is one that I think everyone who wants to be a part of will hopefully be able to get in on the act of.
The giveaway is simple - SKY.fm Radio are offering a free 6 month Premium Upgrade (value at just under $30) for the first 3000 people who email them. To qualify you need to have a blog that’s been going for 1 month. To qualify simply email the URL of your blog to enternetusers_giveaway@sky.fm
This giveaway will be closed off by SKY.fm in 30 days or after the first 3000 winners - whichever comes first.

The Blog Tool that Has Saved Me Months of Work
The biggest single time saver in my blogging is a plugin that many of us take for granted - but which has literally saved me days and days of time.
What it’s done for me can be summed up in this little screen capture taken from the back end of enternetusers:
Yes - last night the amount of spam comments that Akismet has filtered here at enternetusers passed the ‘magical’ 2 million mark.
That’s a frightening statistic on numerous levels.
For starters it shows just how big the problem of comment spam is (I think I started using this about 18 months ago).
Also frightening is the thought of life without Akismet.
Lets do a little arithmetic and see what using it has done for my life:
Let’s assume that if I had to moderate spam comments manually here at enternetusers that it would take around 2 seconds to do each one (I think it could be more than that as it can take a while to track them all down - I know this because when Akismet’s server has gone down for an hour or so it takes forever).
- 2,000,000 comment spams X 2 seconds = 4,000,000 seconds needed for moderating comments.
- 4,000,000 seconds = 66666.666667 minutes
- 66666.666667 minutes = 1111.111111 hours
- 1111.111111 hours = 46.2962 days
Akismet has saved me 46.29 days in the last 18 months. That’s 1.5 months (working non stop 24 hours a day).
Considering that I don’t work 24 hours a day - if I worked 8 hour days it would have taken me 138.88 days (4.6 months) to moderate all those comments manually - more if I took time off for weekends and holidays.
Do you think that I’m happy that I installed Akismet? You bet your life I am!
Update - as has been suggested in comments below - I would strongly encourage you to sign up as a commercial or ‘pro blogging’ users of Akismet if you’re making money from your blog. As part of b5media - enternetusers uses a license that we pay for. This enables Akismet to keep improving.

It’s a “Go With” kind of giveaway!
We’re running a 24-hour giveaway here that offers a $2,000 marketing package to one lucky winner who takes the time to write a brand new post that’s a review of something. Definitely check that out, since it ends on Monday morning (New York, USA) but in the mean time, we’re running this 8-hour giveaway to send out all our remaining business/marketing/life coaching prizes!
I’m going to encourage those interested to enter BOTH, as there is only one winner for the big prize, but we have 10 prizes and 23 total winners on this one! Yes, if you win here, you can’t be eligible to win that bigger one, but it’s something, right? And we’re almost done with the giveaways (only one more 8 hour one after this, and a surprise giveaway at the end) so if you haven’t won something yet, there’s no time like the present to give it a try!
Okay, enough babbling…
The Prizes
- SEO/Internet Marketing Services - Freezing Hot
- $300 AdWords management package and $300 cash - SmallFuel Marketing
- SEO Services - SEO Aware
- one month of one winner’s choice of business coaching for writers, artists, or entrepreneurs and
- one month of group business coaching for 8 winners - Center of Muse
- 5 Secure Delivery Pro subscriptions (digital download management) for free, for life - Secure Delivery
- one year membership - Goal University coaching program - Jill Koenig
- (3 winners) Peace Together T-shirt and 1 hour Finding Inner Peace coaching session with Joseph Bernard, Ph.D - Explore Life Blog
- 1 Month of Wellness Coaching (three 45 minute sessions with a certified wellness coach) - The WellCenter Group
- one full month unlimited assistance from a virtual lifestyle organizer along with a get-back-on-track basket - Mary Jo Rulnick
As you can see, some of these are directly related to your website or business, and others are geared toward YOU as a person. These things go hand-in-hand, especially for entrepreneurs and startups, because when you start off, you ARE your business. I’m very excited about these prizes, being a business owner myself and knowing how important it is to balance these things out in life and get a little help where you need it.
Anyway, here’s the deal…
How To Enter
- All winners will be chosen at random.
- This one will be open until 8pm (New York, USA time) October 7th.
- You may not win if you’ve already won a prize elsewhere (unless we’ve said so on that particular post already that it’s okay).
- While we’d love to be able to let you pick your prizes on these, it’s just way too hectic to be able to do so. Prize distribution will be random.
- Once a particular post closes, we will notify both the sponsor and the winner so that you may work out the details of the prize distribution.
- All you have to do is leave a comment below - Make sure you include “BusinessLife” in it to help us with moderation.
There’s only one more 8 hour giveaway after this, and it’s pretty “random” in terms of prizes, but this is our last batch of business related items. If you’re NOT interested in business stuff, save your entry for the next one (some of these next items will make great gifts for yourself or others and yes, the holidays are NOT far away).
Update
This one’s over gang - head on over to our final 8 hour Birthday Bash Giveaway, and thank you all for participating! Winners and sponsors will be notified soon!

Some of the things they offer include:
- Blog audits

- Social network coaching and strategy
- SEO editing, coaching, and writing
- Custom article writing
- Domain name analysis and brainstorming

How To Enter
This one’s pretty simple: Write a review post on your blog, and link to it in the comments here. You can review anything you want, a movie, a website, a book, a cafe, a TV show, an e-book….. it could be a new flavor of chewing gum for all we care. It has to be a BRAND NEW POST - Don’t just change the date on an old one (we’re on to that one) and if you post an old one, we’ll delete your comment because it will weaken the draw pool for the valid entries.
Just write the review (we’d prefer it to be more than a paragraph of course) and put the link in your comment below.
Oh, and don’t forget the “I’m not a spammer” keyword: “IttyBitty”.
- Winner will be chosen at random and notified by email.
- This one will be open until 9am (New York, USA time) Monday October 8th.
- You may not win if you’ve already won a prize elsewhere (unless we’ve said so on that particular post already that it’s okay).
This is the last 24 hour giveaway - and it’s worth $2000 - so get involved! We’re looking forward to reading your reviews!
Update
Please guys - Read the rules for entry.
Only NEW reviews. We ran into this issue on another giveaway, and I am going to have to delete anything that’s old so we don’t weaken the total number of entries for the draw.
It’s not fair that one person can link to something they already wrote while another person has to take the time to write something to enter. So ALL entries need to be brand new posts. I’ve already deleted 6 entries within the first hour and a half.
This is a HUGE prize, guys. $2,000! We have to be fair.
Update
This one’s over gang - thanks again, and check out the final post from Darren (which includes one very last giveaway - good for 3,000 of you) and thank you all for participating!

How Many Visitors Do You Get On Your Blog? - Poll Results
Last week I asked enternetusers readers this question:
How Many Unique Visitors Does Your Biggest Blog Get Per Day?
Considering that a previous poll found that over 50% of my readers have been blogging for less than a year the following results don’t surprise me (as it generally takes 2-3 years to build a blog to it’s potential).
2144 readers responded and 35% of respondents get less than 100 visitors a day.
Here’s the percentage breakdown for each category:
0 - 100 - 35%
101 - 250 - 16%
251 - 500 - 12%
501 - 1000 - 10%
1001 - 2500 - 10%
2501 - 5000 - 6%
5001 - 10000 - 3%
10001 - 20000 - 2%
20001+ - 5%
While these statistics may be a little depressing - I think they are very worthwhile knowing for a number of reasons:
1. If you’re a PreBlogger (or a new one) - it’s worth knowing that building a blog with thousands of readers is not something that is as simple as signing up for a free blog tool, writing a few posts and expecting people to show up. Blogging takes work - time on a daily basis and time in terms of months/years of consistent blogging.
2. If you’re a blogger who is feeling discouraged by blogging and having a lack of readership - you’re not alone. Many (if not most) bloggers struggle to grow a blog’s readership.
3. There is hope - 5% of you have blogs with over 20,001 daily visitors. While this is a relatively small group when compared with other categories - it can be done.
One Last Thought
As I look over the above chart it strikes me that together as a community we have an enormous reach. I just quickly calculated an estimate of our combined readership by multiplying the number of recipients voting in each category by the mid point of that category (and by multiplying the 117 form the top category by the minimum value).
Using this calculation we have a combined Daily Visitor reach of 4,846,375. Considering that this blog is read by considerably more than the 2144 people who actually voted in this poll (we have about 15 times that many RSS subscribers) the numbers of who we reach each day is quite staggering.
I’m not sure what to do with that knowledge - but it does make me think that we should be working together more to support and build up one another in our readership. Food for thought.
And we just found out about making money app. When your phone rings or you receive an email or receive a text message then you get paid. Could it be that my groom’s fantasies might actually be wilder than the site of me perfectly coiffed, bustled, and veiled?
