enternetusers Virtual Christmas Party
One of the things I miss about not working as part of a larger team (or at least one that is physically in the same city) is the end of year Work Christmas Party.
I’m not sure what happens in other parts of the world but Aussie office Christmas parties have a bit of a reputation of being a place where people really let their hair down and celebrate the year gone by. The drinks flow, the office romance scandals take place, everyone says things that they shouldn’t to the boss and a good time is generally had by all.
So what’s a enternetusers to do when he has an office of one?
I decided to have my own enternetusers Virtual Christmas Party. Maybe I’m a little bored today - but here it is (click to enlarge in a new window)…
Feel free to ‘come to the party’ and post your own Christmas Greetings in comments.
PS: This party was constructed using Comic Life 1.2 (for Mac)

Yahoo! YPN Send Some Publishers a Gift
YPN have joined the gift giving and are sending some of their publishers a…. hmm….well there is some debate over what it is… but it’s a gift that some are calling a bag, others are calling a stadium/travel/picnic blanket…
It comes complete with a card. The thing that seems to be impressing some publishers the most is that the card was hand written and addressed!
See a picture of the gift at Merry Christmas From Yahoo

Small Business Branding Blog Sold
Another way to make money from your blog is to sell it like Michael Pollock from Small Business Branding has just done. He sold it to Yaro from Entrepreneurs Journey for an undisclosed figure.

ecto offers 20% Christmas discount
Adriaan over at ecto has announced a Special Christmas discount of 20% off ecto purchases between 23 - 26 December. I use the Mac version to run all my blogs and it’s probably the best $17.95 I ever spent. I can’t vouch for the Windows version but the Mac one is the best blogging tool I’ve found.

My Advertising and Affiliate Earnings Graph - August 29 to December 19
A number of people have asked me recently how earnings have been for me in the lead up to Christmas. I’m not going to get into figures (I’ve done that enough this year) but I thought I’d show a graph to give an idea of how the past three or four months have gone.
The graph below (click to enlarge in a new window) shows my advertising and affiliate earnings by category from 29 August (the day I started using Chitika - reviewed here). I’ve made the categories AdSense, Chitika, Chitika Referrals, Amazon, Miscellaneous and Clickbank. I have not included other sources of income like Six Figure Blogging, consulting and b5media.
Here is the graph. I’ll make a few comments below it.
Comments, Explanations and Observations
- The Miscellaneous category includes BlogAds, Adbrite ads, a few text ads and sponsorships (I had one with Adobe and another with Ricoh over the past couple of months).
- The Miscellaneous and Amazon numbers are averages spread across each month (ie in December you’ll notice all Amazon earnings are the same).
- The Chitika figures are Unaudited numbers. My audits have been in the vicinity of 10% each month so far so you can visualize some decreases.
- You’ll notice a decrease in Chitika earnings and Chitika Referal earnings in the past month. This coincides pretty closely with the 1st of December change in the way they filter ads. I’m expecting a lower audit this month as a result.
- The peak days were just after thanksgiving from memory - days where online sales are traditionally strong.
- Amazon sales have been particularly good in December - over triple normal figures.
- You’ll notice a dip in AdSense earnings in the middle of the period. There is probably a number of reasons for this. It’s partly due to the introduction of Chitika (ie CTR went down as a result of there being competing ads). Also I noticed the Cost per Click went down a little with Adsense for me in the lull before Chrismas. It has returned in the past few weeks.
- Traffic levels have increased in the past few weeks. This will account for some of the increases over the past few months. I’m expecting that this graph will have a downturn in the weeks after Christmas as traffic slows.
- Traffic is not the only reason for the increases in Chitika. The first few weeks earnings were steady as I didn’t optimize them well and did not have them on all of my blogs. In September and October I expanded my use of them and got smarter with my optimization. You can see that they work well on the topics I cover - particularly my consumer electronic blogs.
It has obviously been an exceptional few months with over 100% growth (at it’s peak it was over triple). As I say - I’m expecting to see a downward slope in the coming weeks but am hopeful that it will maintain a healthy level once the holiday periods are over.

Lessons about Blogging
My recent 18 Lessons I’ve Learnt about Blogging post has been the hottest post on enternetusers by far this month. I’m always amazed by how people love a good list and will link up to it.
One thing that I mentioned in the original post though was that I’d love to read other people’s ‘lessons’ in blogging. It might not be a list of 18 lessons but either leave a comment on the other post or write something on your own blog and leave a comment alerting us to it.
Update: and if you liked the post - bookmark it on del.ico.us. It’s in the popular list but I’d love to see it climb!

Google Release End of Year Zeitgeist 2005
Google has just released their end of year Zeitgeist where they share a few details of some of the more popular search terms in different categories for the year on Google.
These type of lists are not only a bit of fun - I’ve previously used them in thinking about my blog strategies. While it is incredibly difficult to climb to the top of Google’s search results for these terms it gives you a hint as to what different people are into.
Plus they have cool little graphs! Here’s the one graphing the terms ipod, mp3 and podcast.
Top Searches of 2005
1. Janet Jackson
2. Hurricane Katrina
3. tsunami
4. xbox 360
5. Brad Pitt
6. Michael Jackson

10. Harry Potter
Top Searches on Froogle in 2005
