Technorati Problems - Update
A couple of weeks ago I blogged about My Technorati Problems and had quite a large response from it. Unfortunately the response came only from readers of this blog and not from Technorati themselves. Of course as they don’t seem to be indexing this blog I can understand this as my post will not have come up in their own watch lists for their name.
A number of readers have asked for an update on my Technorati issues outlined in the previous post so here is a quick one:
- I still have not heard from Technorati’s customer service department despite emailing them a number of times over the past few months.
- enternetusers is listed by them as not having updated for 222 days. They are only indexing one of my blogs (LivingRoom) which is ironically the blog I update the least.
- enternetusers continues to have a ranking in the top 100 (97 today) yet continues to be left out of the Top 100 list. Some have suggested that this list isn’t updated often and enternetusers will appear next time it updates. I’ve watched the list and have noticed others coming and going from it but am yet to see this blog appear in it.
- The ‘top 100′ yellow button that used to appear next to enternetusers’s name isn’t appearing any more. Previously despite not being in the actual list this yellow button did appear besides my blog’s name.
- There continue to be problems with other site’s trying to access enternetusers’s details through Technorati’s API.
- I have heard through unofficial contacts with people at Technorati that enternetusers is having problems for a number of reasons ranging from that they believe it to be a splog (go figure) through to there being some issue with things at my end. Of course there is continued silence so what the real reason is is something of a mystery and any attempt to fix things from my end is like a stab in the dark.
Interestingly enough I have heard from Technorati over the past couple of weeks.
My email to them asking for more information on advertising with them was responded to within 24 hours. It looks as though at least one Technorati department is staffed adequately enough to respond to emails. Looks like the only way I’ll get featured on the Top 100 Blogs page is if I pay for it. Maybe I should take out an Ad that says that ;-)
I’ll say once again that I love the service that Technorati is developing. What they say they can do (and what they do do) is fantastic and I admire them greatly - but I hear of and experience increasing problems that I don’t see any progress being made on.
New features appear on Technorati every week or so which make it better - but I can’t help but wonder whether it might be time to work on some of the basics a little more instead of producing new features that it seems many of us don’t feature in because the basics of indexing blogs is just not happening.
Hopefully they find the great Web 2.0 developer that David Sifry posted that they are looking for a few weeks back to get things back in order.
update: since writing this post I have had some limited resolution to some of my problems with Technorati. enternetusers is now being indexed (most days) and I have been included in the Top 100 again. Some of my other blogs seem to be randomly indexed while others are dead in the water as far as Technorati seem concerned. I’ve officially given up trying to get them included and will put my energies into more productive things than begging them for inclusion.
I’ve found their customer service to be good when I’ve had their attention - but getting it was difficult and a very long process.

Flipping the Funnel - Another Seth Godin ebook
Seth Godin has just released another free ebook - this time called Flipping the Funnel. In fact there are three versions of it, a standard one, one for not for profits and another for politicians.
In short (and I’ve only scanned it so far) it’s about using web 2.0 sites like del.icio.us, flickr and Squidoo to give your customers a voice about your company/product/service.
It’s probably nothing too revolutionary for most bloggers who have been playing with these concepts for quite some time now but is aimed more at business people I guess.
What I’m more fascinated with about Seth is how he uses his free ebooks to grow his own profile and projects.

Improving the Readability of Your Comments Section
I love it when bloggers get on a ‘hot streak’ with their blogs and write multiple link worthy posts in a short period of time. Rachel’s blog is hot right now in my opinion (I seem to be linking to her a lot) and today she’s written an interesting post on Improving the readability of large numbers of comments which is full of ideas, plugins and suggestions to consider to improve the functionality of your comments section (especially if it’s pretty Active). You wouldn’t want to implement all 10 of her suggestions but there are some great suggestions there. Here’s her headings (with more written under each point):
- Highlight your (own) comments
- Provide visual cues
- Show what’s new
- Split things up
- Newest first
- Distinguish Trackbacks
- Rate comments
- Nested comments
- Editable comments
- Categorise comments

AdSense Revenue Sharing Sites
AdMoolah has put together a useful list of links if you’re looking for sites that allow you to contribute content in return for displaying AdSense ads with your publisher code imbedded into them.
Probably the most well known of these is Digital Point’s Forums which all participants can submit their AdSense publisher code to. The more you post the more chance you have of earning. Of course forums are notoriously hard to monetize - but I know of a couple of bloggers who make a few dollars here and there this way.

AdSense Chinese New Year Ads Reported
Best HYIP Investment Program is seeing what could be Chinese New Year Year of the Dog images in their AdSense ads.
I wondering how many other seasonal AdSense ads publishers who have signed up for them will be sing in over the next year cycle. Has anyone else seen any? I’m yet to see them on any of my blogs.

Blogger Cruise Adds Speakers
I just checked out the Blog Cruise homepage again and noticed that there are new speakers in the list. Headlining it now is Robert Scoble. Also added since last time I looked are Toby Bloomberg, Dave Taylor and John Nardini. The full list is:
- Robert Scoble
- Toby Bloomberg
- Dave Taylor
- B.L. Ochman
- Jeremy Wright
- John Nardini
- Jim Turner
- Scott Goldblatt
- Tris Hussey
A few readers have asked if I’ll be joining the cruise. I’m seriously considering attending and am just working through whether it’s the best time to be away from home with our family growing to 3 a few months before.
Who else is going? Have you booked yet?

AdSense Maintenance Underway
The AdSense login page has been out of action for most publishers for the last hour or so. Don’t panic - this happens from time to time and usually just means they are either doing maintenance or are upgrading some component of their system.
I seem to remember reading somewhere in the last 24 hours that this was a scheduled downtime. When this has happened previously there has been no impact upon earnings as they continue to track your stats - you just can’t see them.
Instead of checking to see if the stats are back over and over it’s a great opportunity to do some blogging - or better still to enjoy your weekend (a bit of self talk here).

Creating PDFs in OSX
If any Apple users have any experience with creating PDF files I’d love to hear from you.
I’ve tried creating them through Word vX and it does it fine but am having issues getting the PDF’s to pick up the hyperlinks as live links. All the other formatting seems to work out fine - it’s just the links that are not coming through.

Put your Blog on a T-Shirt - SnapShirts
Here’s a fun service for bloggers who can’t bear to be without their blogs might like to use. SnapShirts is a T-Shirt company that can make a T-Shirt with a word cloud from your blog on it! They also can make them for different book authors.
You have the option along the way to add or subtract words from the cloud that it suggests and to choose the color and style of your font as well as to choose the color of the T-Shirt.
Pretty cool. T-Shirts cost $18 - $21 depending upon the color you choose.
There’s no way of making any money yourself off these (an affiliate program of some sort would be nice) but it could be a good way to promote your blog if you want to extend your blog promotion to ‘real life’.
It does take a little time for them to come back to you with the final design (they say it can take up to 24 hours) which takes some of the fun out of it but it could be something for people to enjoy.

Blog Design Solutions
I’m quite excited to see that a team of talented blog designers (Phil Sherry, Andy Budd, Simon Collison, Michael Heilemann, Drew McLellan, David Powers, Chris J. Davis and John Oxton) have just announced their new book titled Blog Design Solutions.
I’m not familiar with all of the authors but those that I know have great blogs and know what they are talking about - I’ll definitely be getting myself a copy as I’m a complete dunce when it comes to blog design and I can use any tip I can get.
The blurb at Amazon on the book says:
“In this book, a team of renowned web designers take you through the ins and outs of putting together great blogs. They waste no time harking on about the philosophy of blogs, or the community behind them. Instead, they get straight to the practical details, showing how to set up a basic blog in some of the world’s most popular blogging engines — Movable Type, ExpressionEngine, WordPress, and Textpattern. With your blog set up, they then show you how to build great looking, usable layouts for your blog. The last chapter even shows you how to build your very own PHP/MySQL-based blog engine!”
Pre Order your copy at Blog Design Solutions (affiliate link).
And we just found out about get paid to. When your phone rings or you receive an email or receive a text message then you get paid. Could it be that my groom’s fantasies might actually be wilder than the site of me perfectly coiffed, bustled, and veiled?
