YPN working to introduce Direct Deposits and Increase Ad Relevancy
Jake from Crimson Light has had a conversation with YPN employee Ray Devlin about upcoming features for YPN and has found thaty direct deposits are one feature that they are looking to add (no date given). They are also work on ad relevancy and other ways of speeding up payments. Here’s what Ray had to say:
‘There are new developments on the horizon for the Yahoo! Publisher Network. Points such as shortening the revenue verification period and increased relevance are ongoing improvements. Our publishers have also requested such additions as direct deposit as a form of payment. While we hope to have this available soon, there has been no release date indicated for this.’

Light the Torch - Olympics Blog
In case you hadn’t heard - b5media is having some fun with an Olympic blog over at Light the Torch where we’ve opened it up for others to join us in the blogging frenzy (it’s a group blog with bloggers each representing their own countries - there are even Aussies blogging on it - and we’re not that big on the winter games). All money earned from it is going to athletics organization.

3Bubbles to add Real Time Chat to Blogs
TechCrunch has information on a service that I know will interest some enternetusers readers seeking to create discussion around their posts. It’s called 3bubbles (to launch next week) and is an Ajax based chat system that you can add to your blog posts (via your templates) which will allow readers to have a chat (live) about the post.
What is doubly interesting to Pro Bloggers is that they are planning to integrate advertising into the system and will share revenue earned with bloggers.
It’s definitely an interesting idea and one that will be especially useful on highly trafficked blogs where there is critical mass to make it work, particularly on their most recent posts. I know that comments appear on my posts within minutes of me posting here at enternetusers and so it could well work and help create a more dynamic environment - however on some of my less popular blogs I’m unsure how it would go.
The other implication of 3bubbles will be upon comments sections which one would presume would be used less. One of the advantages of comments is that they become a permanent part of your blog’s page - a permanent record that is easy to find and that becomes indexed in search engines along with your post.
From what I can see of the screen shots of 3bubbles they do allow readers to view previous messages.
I’ll be interested to see what this service is like, particularly the way that they allow bloggers to deal with chats that get out of hand (I don’t particularly want people using a chat window on my blogs to abuse each other, promote their own stuff in a spammy way etc).
I’ve got my reservations - but will hold off on judging it til I get to see it in action.

Insular Linking on Blog Networks
jkOnTheRun has an interesting story on how Blog Networks can get pretty insular with their ’source links’ (ie crediting where they get stories from).
The example given is one where the writer (jk) had been credited as being the source of a story on a Weblogs Inc blog (which was indexed by Technorati) but then on checking later found that the link had been removed and another WIN blog was linked to as being the source of the story.
While it is difficult sometimes to source stories when you hear about them from multiple sources (I struggle with it anyway) it probably isn’t the go to change such links afterwards in my opinion.
What do you think?
Thanks to Phil from Geeky Info for IM’ing me the story
update: As I’ve reflected upon this even in the last half hour I realise that it’s a bigger problem than just a blog network one. All bloggers face choices when acknowledging sources of information.
The first choice is whether to acknowledge it at all (I blog in one industry where I know my blog is watched by numerous others for stories and is rarely linked to as a source - very frustrating) and the second choice is usually about who to acknowledge. The complication is often about multiple sources (and the messyness of this) but I’m sure it is also at times about established relationships/friendships or the desire to impress other blogs or the desire to have an edge over other blogs.
I’m not wanting to say that this issue is an easy one in every instance (it’s quite complex to look at bloggers motivatioins) but it’s a worth while topic to look at and address.
I’d be interested to hear what procedures bloggers use in linking. Do you have some sort of linking policy (formal or informal?) Do you acknowledge the first source you find, the best source, multiple sources, any sources?
Update: It looks like the situation mentioned in this post has been resolved.

Blogging for Beginners - Coming Soon
Earlier in the week I asked for questions for my upcoming series of posts on Blogging for Beginners.
The response was great. For starters the questions asked confirmed that I’d already written articles on the write topics. They also gave me a few good ideas for others.
I’ve taken some of the questions that I’m not feeling as qualified to answer and have approached 5 other great bloggers to answer them. So far Andy Wibbels has agreed to write one and I’m confident that he’ll be joined by at least a couple of others as guest contributers.
If you have further questions you want to add to the list please do so over the weekend in the comments of this post.
I hope to launch the series on Monday.
Update: Also featured as guests in this series will be Peter Flaschner, Yaro Starak, Duncan Riley and Aaron Brazell. It’s shaping up to be a great series.

When Not Posting is a Good Thing for your Blog
Wayne’s hit the nail on the head with his post Posting desperation: When anything won’t do where he examines a good strategy for beating bloggers block…. Posting Nothing at all.
‘Instead of letting some slipshod meaningless post fill that taunting empty posting box, it would be better for you and you blog to skip a day. I know, I know, that is probably blasphemy to the ears of many. Not posting at all is also a solid blogging technique that is rarely discussed.’
Wayne goes on to talk about some of the consequences of feeling you have to post about something and as a result posting substandard content. The crux of his argument is that your blog is your brand everything that you present on it to readers becomes part of this.
In a sense, every post you write has the potential to add to your brand or take from it. Substandard posts written just for the sake of posting something might give you temporary relief from the feeling of having a slightly out of date blog - but they could also do you serious damage, especially if it becomes a regular thing.
Of course if bloggers block settles in for the long term you there are always strategies for combatting it - but one to consider is as Wayne suggests - ‘do nothing’.

YPN ads Down
I’ve had a couple of readers IM me in the last hour to let me know that YPN ads are down/blank and have been so for ‘hours’. WebmasterWorld Forums also have a discussion on the topic of YPN Blank Ads as does Digital Points forum in the Yahoo Ads Down? thread which confirms that it’s wider spread than just a few scattered publishers.
Looks like it’s more than a quick glitch with some reporting up to 3 hours of no ads.
update: Some publishers are reporting that their ads are returning slowly to some of their sites.

Chitika eMiniMall ‘Seasonal Special’ Ads
It looks like Chitika are getting in on the action with ads focussed upon seasons and holidays with their new ‘Seasonal Special’ type ads (see screen cap below) - kicking off with Valentines Day ads for the next week. Publishers logging in to Chitika at the moment will see them being promoted as:
‘The Seasonal Special category uses the new Chitika Category Hints feature, to display the latest, most popular, seasonal products. Here is a great way to feature items perfect for Valentine’s Day. Get started with Seasonal Specials.’
The ads that they have rotating there are mainly for flowers and fluffy toys.
I presume there will be other products targeted at different times of the year.
