Blog Cruise Participants Need to ReRegister
Just a short note to say that if you’ve registered for the Blogonomics Cruise that you might need to read this and re-register because organizers had a hitch with the registration process - in short they didn’t get everyone’s details so you might think you’re going but they might not know about it. Best to re-register.
On another note - Dave Taylor had to pull out of the speaking line up but Nick Wilson from Performancing has joined it. Now I’m really excited as I’ve talked to Nick on the phone a few times and he’s a pretty smart guy.

Adsense Tracker Software Review | Performancing.com
Chris writes a useful review of the AdSense Statistics package AdSense Gold (aff link) which is a package I’ve considered purchasing for a while now. The tracker gives you a whole new level of AdSense statistics. He writes:
‘Using this script I found out that all the clicks on one of my sites was coming from the homepage. This is not common across my sites, most of them have high performing content pages. Discovering what it was that was causing this anomaly paid back the price of the script on its own.’
Chris is a smart guy so this is a recommendation worth taking seriously if you’re thirsting for a little more information on your AdSense.

Writing Integrity Day
Andy Wibbels is having a writing integrity day.
What is it?
It’s pretty simple really - it’s an attempt to get all that writing you’ve been putting off done by being a little accountable to others. He’s done it before - it goes something like this:
- We all get on the phone at 10am Eastern/New York time.
- Everyone takes 10 seconds (no more!) to say what they are going to work on for the next hour.
- Hang up.
- Write like hell.
- Get back on the phone the next hour and do it again.
- Rinse and repeat until 5pm.
It’s a fun idea to help make the day as productive as possible and which will get us bloggers who sit alone all day staring at the computer interacting with ‘real’ people for once.
Of course it doesn’t quite work for us non US types - I’ll be well and truly asleep for most of the time everyone else is writing with integrity.
Interestingly the date Andy’s chosen is 14 February - Valentines day - the perfect day to connect with other bloggers :-)

YPN Banning Some Publishers for Excessive non US Traffic
It looks like YPN have started banning some publishers for sending too much international traffic to their advertisers.
Messages like this one have been sent to publishers being banned for this:
‘We have terminated your Yahoo! Publisher Network beta account [ACCOUNT ID] for breach of the Terms and Conditions and/or Program Policies. Your breach includes but may not be limited to sending traffic from users located outside the United States, in violation of Section 11(l) of the Terms and Conditions. In accord with Section 6(a), we will not include such amounts in your payment. We have refunded amounts generated from the non-US users to our advertisers and will pay any remaining amount owed to you in accord with the Terms and Conditions.’
While I knew YPN is in beta and only accepting US publishers I wasn’t aware that their TOS excluded non US traffic. How publishers are supposed to stop this happening without getting into geo targeting ads is a little beyond my grasp.
I wonder if banned publishers will be allowed back into YPN if and when they go international.
Action like this makes me wonder whether YPN might actually be some time away from expanding into an international ad network. Perhaps non US publishers might have a bit longer to wait to be included than they thought.

Rouse or Rowse?
Just a quickie. I’ve noticed a bit of confusion over my name of late - particularly with the letter ‘U’ slipping in.
It’s actually Rowse.
Of course to confuse the issue it’s pronounced like you’d say it if you were to spell it Rouse…. like House and Mouse - but it’s Rowse.
Not a biggie - but thought it was worth clarifying.

Know More Media Blog Network
Just stumbled over Know More Media, a new (launched mid December, I must have missed it in the end of year frenzy) blog network that has quickly launched quite a few blogs - all focussing upon business. I’m yet to get through all of their blogs yet but some of them seem to be doing pretty well - and they are covering a large range of topics within their niche.
I think we’ll see more and more niche-networks emerge in 2006.
My only unsolicited advice/feedback/observations to Know More Media is (hoping I’m not overstepping the mark here - it’s really just my initial impressions):
- As I surfed through the blogs, on quite a few of them I had little idea what they were about until I really searched around them. While having titles that don’t explicitly say what the blog is about is fine - I think it’s important to have make it very clear to readers from the moment they arrive on the blog what it is about. This can be communicated in a number of ways from the title itself, to using images, to using a statement/description/tagline that spells it out. Blog readers stay at blogs on average for just a few seconds so first impressions and clear communication are essential.
- My own preference is not to publicly launch empty blogs (they are currently seeking writers on 32 of their 65 blogs). While I can see some reasons why it might be good to do (it gets them indexed in Search Engines and perhaps creates some interest in recruiting bloggers) I think there are also some costs. For starters it make the network seem a little inActive and ghost town-ish and secondly I wonder if defining a blog without knowing the blogger might be the wrong way around. My own preference is to find bloggers and then design a blog around them (subtle difference). Of course this is just my own approach and I wouldn’t impose it upon anyone - there is ‘more than one way to skin’ a cat as they say.
The blogs that are currently Active have some really great bloggers on them and I suspect this will be a pretty Active and worthwhile network to keep an eye on. As I say - dominating a niche with a network is something I’m seeing quite a bit of at present.
Update: Tim from Know More Media has responded to my post here and gives some insight into why they’ve started with empty blogs - along similar lines to what I thought.
I really appreciate the response from Tim - I was a touch worried that this post would be taken in the wrong way - my intention is definately just to give honest encouraging feedback and it seems it was taken that way - phew.

Some Google AdSense Payments Late
It dawned on me last night that I have not had a cheque from AdSense arrive in my PO Box for quite a while so I went digging back through my records. Lucky I did because the one that my payment records say was issued on 23 December never actually arrived.
I’ve been a publisher with AdSense since October 2003 and have never had a problem with late payments so I guess it was bound to happen sometime. Oddly enough I don’t seem to be the only one waiting on this cheque - b5media’s mailbox is being checked daily for it, as are three other publishers who I talk with on IM.
Perhaps a patch of cheques is sitting unnoticed on someone’s desk in AdSense HQ?
It’s probably nothing more than their normal ‘lost in mail’ problems that must happen every month with the amount of cheques they send out but it is a little odd that so many people I know seem to be waiting.
If you haven’t had your cheque sent yet you can write to them asking for a reissue via their Contact page. They only do this after the 25th of the month following the month when a cheque was issued. It’s all a little confusing but they explain the process of what to do if a payment is missing here.
update: I’ve been in contact with the AdSense team on this and am getting a cheque reissue as it’s now 2 Feb and still no cheque for November earnings.

Midnight Links
Here’s a few random links I came across today to keep those of you on the other side of the world amused while I sleep tonight. Enjoy:
- WordPress 2.0.1 Released - pretty self explanatory.
- Dave Taylor asks the question - Does Your Top Level Domain Affect Your Search Engine Rankings?
- FM Media Signs Digg - interesting news!
- Common AdWords Misconception Explained - official AdWords blog attempts to explain why minimum bids vary. Something to do with quality of ads that goes beyond my ability to comprehend at this time of night :-)
- Expression Engine Shootout - A competition to find the best Expression Engine Website with $15,000 in prizes.

Six Figure Blogging to Attend Blog Cruise
Well it’s official - I’m now one of the presenters on the Blogonomics Blog Cruise (my page is yet to go up on the presenters list but trust me - barring unforeseeable circumstances I’ll be there - update - it’s up now - although they must not have like my picture - will have to send them a non nude one).
In fact Andy and I will be presenting a condensed version of the Six Figure Blogging course as a 3 hour intense workshop (at no extra cost on the cruise). Of course the cruise does go for 4 days and the ship is only so big (I can’t stay in my cabin the whole time) so the 3 hour workshop is only the starting point for plenty of other great conversations I guess.
There is also talk of me doing another shorter session on SEO and Magnetization of Blogs (yet to be confirmed).
Coming? Help me pay for my airfare? - of course getting to Fort Lauderdale means I’m going to be incurring some expenses (flights are not cheap these days from Australia) so if you’re planning on attending there is a way you can help out a bit (without spending any extra money) by simply letting the organizers of the cruise know I referred you to the cruise in your sign up process. Doing so will earn me a small amount to go towards my costs.
You can do this as follows:
When a person registers for the Blogonomics Blog Cruise they are requested to enter the website that referred them. Simple add www.enternetusers.net. Also in the entry for “Registrant Code” your need to insert the code “enternetusers”.
I’m very very excited about this opportunity. Both to actually do some live presenting on blogging but also to meet those that I know are already coming (starting with the speaker list - but going beyond that to some of the regular readers of this blog).
Lastly if you’re a company that has a product that relates to blogging I’d love to talk to you about a sponsorship of our session on the cruise. There are numerous ways you can sponsor the cruise and the many sessions that it will have but particularly Andy and I are looking for someone to sponsor our workshop on Six Figure Blogging. There is more information on sponsorship on the cruise sponsorship page.

Spam Karma 2 and the Eternal Struggle against Comment Spam
Users of Spam Karma 2 (a WP comment spam plugin) might have noticed increases in comment spam in the last week. Dr Dave (the guy behind SK2) has written a post with a little information on this and the struggle he faces in getting on top of it. He also asks users of SK2 to consider a donation so that he can dedicate more time to fixing it. I for one am someone willing to put some money up and encourage others who want to see better tools developed to combat comment spammers to do likewise.
