Short Vacation
V and I will be heading up the highway this morning for a long weekend away from Melbourne. After a pretty massive month of blogging and other work the break comes at a good time for us both as we’re both pretty worn out. I’ll be leaving my laptop at home so it shall be a completely blogging free long weekend. Don’t worry if you’re relying upon enternetusers for some reading over the weekend though - I’ve left a couple of posts to go off over the next day or two.
I’m told it is a long weekend this weekend in the US also. So those of you who are Adsense users will probably have a lower few days than normal - its on weekends like these that Adsense discussion forums go a little crazy with people thinking that Adsense has broken - it hasn’t so don’t stress too much.
It’s also weekends like these that Google often rolls out updates of page rank and backlinks. I don’t know if this will happen (I’ve not got any inside word) but you never know - I’ve got a hunch that its about due.
So have a good weekend wherever you are - I hope its a safe and restful one.
Lastly - consider visiting and supporting Red Cross or some other organization to support their work around the world on this weekend where there are so many struggling (like in the Gulf Coast and Niger to name just two).

I’m a Six Figure Blogger
It just hit me - like a truck - that I’ve just become six figure blogger. When Andy and I selected that name for our course on entrepreneurial blogging - earning over $100k from blogging in a 12 month period was more of a catchy name and a dream than an achievable thing - but sometime in the last month or so it actually became a reality.
August is over and my monthly Adsense figures were a new record - the daily average was $511.27 with the monthly total coming in at just a stones throw from $16,000 (USD). The following picture is a screen capture (with my personal details blocked out) of the monthly total. It actually ended up being 0.36 cents higher than the total you see there (it all counts I guess).
As you’d expect, I’m pretty happy with that total - but what made me even happier (and made my heart skip a beat) was to look at the total for the past 12 month period and realize that this month’s total took me over the magical $100,000 since 1 September last year. In fact it took me over that mark considerably.
I wasn’t planning on an announcement of earnings this month - but I guess in the lead up to a course on six figure blogging it might be a good thing to actually let people know that it’s possible for a one person show to hit that kind of mark with enough time, luck and honest hard work.

Comparing AdSense and Yahoo’s Publisher Network
Jen has a very interesting post comparing Adsense and Yahoo’s Publisher Network ads on her Women’s Finance blog. It’s well worth a read as it reveals that both YPN and Adsense have some clear advantages over one another.
If it’s high click values that you’re after it seems that YPN is your best bet - however if it’s CTR, ePCM or ad relevancy you’ll probably lean toward Adsense. Of course it’s very early days for YPN - without a doubt they’ll be working on issues of relevancy and CTR - if they can it could be well worth the switch when they come out of beta.

In related news - I’ve noticed that in the last few days quite a few bloggers have been accepted into the YPN beta test. It looks like they’ve opened things up to a second round of testers which is a sign that it is a step closer to full release. Still no non North American testers though as far as I can see.

Entrepreneur’s Journey
I’ve spent quite a bit of time this morning chatting on IM with Yaro from Entrepreneur’s Journey. Yaro submitted posts during the 31 Day project and caught my attention with a coupe of his posts and by the fact that he’s a fellow Aussie.
Wandering through his blog has been a rich experience - worth a read is his Business Timeline (you’ll need some time - it’s long) as well as a post titled Do You Want to Run Your Own Business? which gives a good realistic indication on what it can be like for someone getting into small business. He makes points in this last post on:
1. Say good bye to a reliable and predictable income.
2. Your business is your life.
3. You may never make real money until you sell your business.
4. There is no superannuation, paid leave or sick leave.
5. Workmates
I’d say for me all of his points ring true - perhaps except for point 3 at this stage of my business.
Anyway - check out Yaro’s stuff - he’s an inspiring guy.

Yahoo Publishing Network Agreement Excludes Non US Readers from Viewing Ads
A reader just emailed me to let me know that he’d been accepted into Yahoo’s Publishing Network as a beta tester but that he’d noticed a rather odd clause in the agreement that he had to enter into. The section in question reads:
‘you are a US-based business and you are operating Your Site solely for viewing and use by users within the US; and
…
display all or part of the Ad Unit to any user located outside the US;’
I knew Yahoo were only accepting US publishers into the beta test - but to limit them to only show ads to US readers is news to me and rather impractical. I know that I’ve seen quite a few sites with YPN ads (I’m in Australia) so either a lot of beta testers are breaking this agreement or YPN have made some sort of a mistake with the clause.
Strange.

Blog Herald tests Wordpress.com
Duncan has been invited to Alpha test Wordpress.com and has been documenting his set up and initial impressions of it here. His actual testblog is over here (not much to see yet).
I’ve been asked if I want an invitation and have replied in the affirmative and am awaiting the official invitation. Looking forward to it - although a little disappointed by the news from Duncan that there is no way to tweak templates. There is a chance this is not just a Alpha testing quirk either with some saying its just the way WordPress.com is. If this is the case you’ll not see many/any enternetuserss using the system as it’ll mean an inability to add ad code.
Anyway - I’m keen to test it for myself and run it through it’s paces.

Scoop Blogging
Sometimes it is really fun to be a small time blogger because it can free you up to do things that a lot of the bigger websites in your niche are unable to do.
For example - my Digital Camera site is one of my bigger blogs - yet in comparison to some of the biggest digicam website our there it’s very small. This doesn’t mean I can’t occasionally beat the big sites at their own game though. Today is an example of this.
This afternoon I had an email from a reader with ‘connections’ who gave me information on a digital camera (the Nikon D200) which has been rumored to be coming out for 12 months now. It’s a camera that everyone has hypothesized about but which there have been few firm details on. So when I got a picture and specifications (still unconfirmed but looking pretty solid) as well as a few other facts that indicate the information is reliable I posted about it on a Nikon D200 page.
The cool thing about this is that because I’m a smaller site and am not seen as a major player by the major digital camera manufacturers I do not have any of the non disclosure agreements with them that most of the other bigger sites have. I know that most of these sites will have information on this new camera days before it’s announced - but that legally they are bound not to mention it on their sites until the official release date (rumored to be 1 September).
This means I have a scoop of sorts and am reaping the rewards of something that is somewhat exclusive (there are other sites posting it - but they are mainly smaller than mine). One of the benefits is that other significant sites are linking to mine (example 1, example 2 and example 3). It also gives me a few days head start to get indexed by Google and other search engines. As a result on the day of the official release I’ll be well positioned to receive significant traffic and hopefully will be established at the top of the search engines for the term for some time. (update: we’re already #3 in Google on it - with a few more links we could hit #1 - feel free to link up!).
This is part of the fun of blogging for me - the thrill of chasing down a story and the satisfaction of a plan coming together nicely.
My blog will never compete at the very top of this niche on all related keywords - there is just too much competition - but I’m happy to buzz around the edges and take a little ground where I can.
I guess the take home tip is to keep your eye open for the scoop and be ready to mobilize and act fast to take advantage of things when they fall into your lap.
