5 Ways to Enhance Your Creativity

This week I’ve been exploring the topic of Creativity and how to be a more creative blogger (see the previous posts on the creative process and attitudes of creative people). The first part explored methods of creativity, yesterday I shared some attitudes of creative people and today I’d like to get a little more practical and will share a few ways that I one might bring a little extra creativity into their lives.

1. Stimulate Yourself

Most of us know the theory of ‘what goes in determines what comes out’ pretty well when it comes to our physical bodies - however the same principle applies when it comes to our minds.

I find that the more I stimulate myself with a variety of new sounds, sights, ideas, conversations, tastes, people etc the more creative ideas that seem to come out. I’m no scientist but am assured by friends who study this type of thing that stimulating your mind with ‘new’ things is very good for it.

So you hereby have permission to take yourself to see a movie, to read a book, treat yourself to a magazine, to make a new friend, to buy yourself a new CD, to try a new radio station and even to take a trip and visit a new culture!

Regularly stretch and exercise your brain and you’ll be surprised what it can produce when you call on it to perform.

2. Give Yourself Space

When it comes to physical fitness we know that exercise is a good thing - but so is rest.

I once heard of a study that was done on different groups of people to determine how much work they should do each week to be most productive on an hourly basis.

The finding was that six solid days work and one day with complete rest was the best balance for being productive.

If you’re anything like me, life’s pretty busy and the concept of space or rest can be a challenge - however if you want to be a productive and creative person you need to prioritize it.

I find that the best way to have times of relaxation in my week is to schedule them. Grab your diary and block out time to ‘just be’ over the next few weeks.

I give myself hour long breaks each day (at least one), days off each week and longer breaks off every few months.

PS: there are different types of ’space’ that it can be worth giving yourself. The above might just sound like I give myself complete time off - however I also give myself space in my work to be creative.

For example, every week or two I set myself an hour or so to do some brainstorming. I’ll sit down with a notebook or my computer and either just write (free flow) or will sit down with a particular idea or problem that I want to work on and brainstorm around that. While these are ‘work’ times they are always done offline with the phone off and in a place where I know I won’t be interrupted. There is usually a very open agenda and it’s all about letting my mind take me where it takes me. It’s often in these sessions that I get great ideas.

3. Mix Up Your Environment

A few months ago I had a realization that really challenged me.

1. I spend most of my day in front of my computer - online.
2. I rarely have creative ideas when sitting in front of my computer - online.
3. Most of my creative ideas come when I’m out and about interacting with people or in different settings - offline.

My most creative ideas come when I’m not at home sitting in front of my computer - yet that’s where I spend most of my time. Hmmmmm.

Since having this realization I’ve started being intentional about going out more.

Now, if I’ve got a meeting, I schedule it for a cafe, park or bar.

Now, if I have to spend a morning writing posts or training material for b5, I do it offline in a cafe, at a mates place or even in the backyard.

4. Be a People Person

I’m an introvert. In fact some of the personality tests that I’ve done rate me at the most introverted level possible. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the company of people - it’s just that I don’t get my energy from interacting with others - I get it from being alone.

So I’m introverted - however I also know that if I give into my introversion too much that I’m depriving myself of something that I need to sustain myself - both emotionally but also creatively.

People bring new ideas, perspectives, questions and experiences to the problems that you’re attempting to solve in your own work. It’s when these new perspectives come together with your own that the creative sparks often fly and some of the best new ideas come to life.

So this little introvert has been on a bit of a mission lately - to spend more time with people - real people (and not just those virtual friendships that so many of us are used to having). I’m trying to do this both on a friendship/mateship level but also intentionally as a business strategy by finding a handful of creative people who I can regularly hang out with and swap ideas, brainstorm and dream with on a semi-regular basis.

5. Record Your Ideas

Those crazy and zany creative ideas that begin to come when you start stimulating yourself with new things, creating space, mixing up your environment and hanging out with creative people can come at the most unexpected times. The problem is that unless you have a way of capturing and processing them they will only ever remain as a fleeting thought - soon to be forgotten.

There are many ways to record ideas like this. Here are a few that I’ve used lately:

  • Idea folder on desktop - for those times that the ideas hit me while I’m in front of my computer - I jot them as a text file and park them in a folder on my desktop.
  • Memo’s on phone - I’m increasingly relying upon my phone to keep me organized (it’s synced with my computer’s calendar) but also to help me capture ideas. I’m constantly adding memos to myself.
  • SMS yourself - since getting a phone with a better memo function I don’t do this as much but I used to text message myself all the time with ideas
  • Leave yourself a voice message - sometimes it’s not practical to write yourself a memo or text message and you need to capture an idea verbally. I do this my calling my mobile phone, from my mobile phone which then diverts me to my voice mail service where I leave myself a message with the idea that’s buzzing around in my head. In a sense this becomes a dictaphone of ideas. In recent times I’ve stopped doing this and have started recording my ideas on my phone in video to replay later.
  • Notebooks - yes, very un-webby - but effective. I’m a moleskine fan and try to have one with me when I’m on the road and needing to capture longer ideas but am unable to use my computer.

I’m sure you will have other ways of capturing creative ideas (please share them below). However you do it, the key is not just to get them down - but to work out how to refine them and do something with them. I suspect that most well intentioned creative types have a method of capturing ideas - however if you’re like the challenge is in collating them. Most of us probably have notebooks, phones and computers full of ideas (not to mention the 400 post it notes gathering dust on our desks) however we don’t actually ever go back to them.

I’m attempting to spend a little time at the end of each day going through all my notes and writing them down in an ideas document on my computer that I regularly return to. It seems to be working so far.

By no means do I have a monopoly on this ‘how to be creative’ stuff. Having chatted to many of you I know that enternetusers readers are some of the most creative people going around and I’d love to hear your ideas on the topic.

Top 5 - Group Writing Project Day 2

Top-5Today is the first time that I’ve run a Group Writing project where the submissions have come in faster than I am able to read them all (I will read them all though!). You readers have blown me away today by the sheer numbers of you throwing yourselves into this project and by the creativity and diversity of your approaches.

Today we’ve had 242 submissions which on top of yesterdays 132 means we’ve already hit 374 bloggers participating (around 30 more than our previously most popular project - with still 2 days to go).

The Prize and Why Chitika Rocks - #4

As a little thank you to the sponsor of this Group Writing Project (did I mention they’re putting up $1001?) I’m writing a mini series of comments about the - My Top 5 Reasons that Chitika Rocks. Today we’re counting down to number 4.

RpuOne of the best converting ad units from Chitika that I run on a few of my blogs is the Related Products Unit (RPU). These units simply look at the keywords that you suggest to them (I link them to the headline of my post) and then provide a text link to 3 related products. These are CPC units and they convert brilliantly - especially if you place them at the end of a post about a product (ie these won’t work as well on non product related posts).

Even though these ads appear at the bottom of my posts they convert as well (if not better) than ads I have above the fold. They’re gold! RPUs wont work for everyone (and Chitika do have a few requirements for publishers before they allow them to be used but if they let you into the program I’d highly recommend testing them on a product related blog.

So today I thought I’d do something a little different and track which five entries from yesterdays list that most people clicked upon. I tracked this using MyBlogLog’s outbound stats checker. Here’s what I found (yep - it’s the ‘top 5′ - I had to didn’t I?).

1. Be First (the most clicked link was the first one on the list - all were in the top half of the list)
2. Write about blogging - I guess it makes sense. Readers of enternetusers are bloggers… it’s a topic that will appeal
3. Be a little Creative with your title (that last one got me to click on it)
4. ‘How to’ posts seem to work (all really promised to teach or provide something useful at some level)
5. Be Quirky or Amusing - many of the next 10 most popular posts had very amusing titles or were quirky (like My 5 Fingers Ranked, 5 Superhuman Powers I would like to have and 5 Cool Things You can do with your DNA).

Google Analytics Gets an Upgrade

Users of Google Analytics will be happy to hear that it’s about to get an upgrade. The Google Analytics official blog reports the New Version and says that it includes a redesigned reporting interface, new email and export reports, custom dashboard, trend and over-time graph and more contextual help tips.

This upgrade will be rolled out over the coming weeks and users will have access to the old version for a month.

Search Engine Land has some screenshots of the new version.

update: Speaking of Metrics Packages and Upgrades - Sitemeter users will notice some changes to their stats today also. It largely seems to be a cosmetic at this stage with a new logo and color scheme but it’s definitely easier on the eye. They seem to be rolling this out on their different servers right now.

Blogger Earnings - How Much Money Can Bloggers Earn?

I get the question of ‘How Much Can Bloggers Earn?’ quite a bit.

Paula Neal Mooney has put together an interesting list of Bloggers and the Salaries that they make from their blogging. It’s a list that I suspect has taken her considerable time to put together.

While this type of list is pretty difficult to put together accurately (some bloggers talk about their earnings explicitly while others are a little more general - and I’m sure there are many bloggers not on the list because they don’t disclose earnings at all) it does show the type of money that some bloggers are making.

My own place on the list is one of the more ‘vague’ ones. Paula estimates that I earn between $120,000 and $1,200,000…. she’s right :-)

9 Attitudes of Highly Creative People

Creativity-1Yesterday I looked at 5 methods for being creative. Today I’d like to look at some attitudes to build into your approach if you want to be a more creative person:

1. Curiosity

I’ve written previously on the topic of curiosity because I’m convinced that it is an essential skill to build as a blogger. Learning to ask ‘why’, ‘what if’ and ‘I wonder…’ are great questions t build into your life if you want to be a more creative person.

2. Seeing Problems as Interesting and Acceptable

ChallengeOne of the problems of the Western mindset is that we often see problems or obstacles in life as unacceptable parts of life. We avoid pain or suppress it when it comes and in doing so don’t often see and feel symptoms that are there to tell us something important. Creative people see problems as a natural and normal part of life - in fact they often have a fascination with problems and are drawn to them.

3. Confronting Challenge

Many of the most creative ideas through out history have come from people facing a challenge or crisis and rather than running from it asking ‘how can I overcome this’?

4. Constructive Discontent

Creative people often have an acute awareness of what’s wrong with the world around them - however they are constructive about this awareness and won’t allow themselves to get bogged down in grumbling about it - they take their discontent and let it be a motivation to doing something constructive.

5. Optimism

OptimismCreative people generally have a deeply held belief that most (if not all) problems can be solved. No challenge is too big to be overcome and no problem cannot be solved (this doesn’t mean they’re always happy or never depressed - but they don’t generally get stumped by a challenge).

6. Suspending Judgment

The ability to hold off on judging or critiquing an idea is important in the process of creativity. Often great ideas start as crazy ones - if critique is applied too early the idea will be killed and never developed into something useful and useable. (note - this doesn’t mean there is never a time for critique or judgement in the creative process - it’s actually key - but there is a time and place for it).

7. Seeing Hurdles as leading to improvements and solutions

HurdlesThis relates to some of the above - but by ‘hurdles’ I mean problems and mistakes in the creative process itself. Sometimes it’s on the journey of developing an idea that the real magic happens and it’s often out of the little problems or mistakes that the idea is actually improved.

8. Perseverance

Creative people who actually see their ideas come to fruition have the ability to stick with their ideas and see them through - even when the going gets tough. This is what sets apart the great from the good in this whole sphere. Stick-ability is key.

9. Flexible Imagination

FlexibleI love watching a truly creative person at work when they’re ‘on fire’. They have this amazing ability to see a problem or challenge and it’s many potential solutions simultaneously and they have an intuitive knack at being able to bring previously disconnected ideas together in flashes of brilliance that seem so simple - yet which are so impossible to dream up for the average person.

Is Creativity tied to Personality Type or Can it be Learned?

As I read through this list of traits of creative people - the question that I find myself asking is whether creativity is tied to personality type or whether it can be learned.

My own uneducated answer to this question is - ‘yes’.

Some people are just creative - they don’t train themselves to think like they do and they often don’t even know that they are any different from the rest of us - it’s just who they are.

However I believe that we can all enhance our ability to be creative over time.

Tomorrow I’m going to round off this mini-series of posts on creativity by suggesting a few practical things that those of us wanting to enhance our creativity might build into our lives.

Top 5 - Group Writing Project Day 1

Top-5Yesterday when I announced this month’s Group Writing Project I had a feeling that it’d be popular - but I didn’t expect the massive list of submissions that I’m about to lay on you. It’s been only 18 hours of the first day and already we have 132 submissions (and a few more have already arrived for tomorrow’s batch). In the midst of those submitted are some great posts (with such variety!). Hours of surfing fun!

Why Chitika Rocks - #5

All of our ‘Top 5′ posts are in the running to take home $1001 which has been generously donated by Chitika.

I said that for each day of the project I’d tell you something that I love about Chitika (and in doing so will come up with my own ‘top 5) so here’s my #5.

The first thing I like about Chitika’s eMiniMall ads is that they’re an interActive little ad unit. Where as most ad networks are developing ad units that are pretty stagnant for readers eMiniMalls offer a more dynamic ad which just beg to be clicked. With the ‘description’, ‘best deals’ and search tabs as well as on multi product units being able to bring up different products without having to refresh the page - the unit actually offers readers a number of different ways to interact with the ad which in my experience is leading to pretty good CTR.

How to Be a More Creative Blogger - Methods of Creativity

Last week while cleaning up my hard drive I came across an old presentation that I gave to a group of young leaders on how to develop your creativity.

As I read through it I realized that some of it was quite appropriate for bloggers wanting to be more creative in their blogging and so thought that this week I’d present a short series of posts based upon my presentation. Today I’ll start with a post on ‘methods of creativity‘.

I’m not sure where I got this material from - it’s likely that at least some of it comes from some of Edward DeBono’s material (but it’s been a decade since I researched this).

So where do creative ideas come from?

As I ponder the different types of creative posts that I’ve written or that I’ve seen others write - they generally come in one of the following ways:

1. Evolution

When new ideas come as a result of building upon previous ones. This is very much a step by step process where at each step the progression in ideas very small but where over time it is significant.

A great blog related example of this has been the evolution of most blogging platforms, like WordPress which periodically updates it’s features - building each time on what they previously had.

Most bloggers enter into this evolutionary process every day with their blogging - taking previously expressed ideas (both their own and those of others) and extending them.

A good question to ask yourself when entering into this evolutionary process is - ‘how could I improve (insert thing to evolve here)….?’

Evolution isn’t the ’sexiest’ of the methods that I’ll talk about here - but it’s probably the most common way of creating new ideas.

2. Reapplication

When you look at something old in a new way.

The exercise that I did with participants in my presentation to illustrate this point was to give each person a fork and to tell them to come up with as many new uses for a fork as they could in 2 minutes.

Most people start that type of exercise somewhat paralyzed by their previous boxing of forks - but breaking outside the box can lead to some interesting (and sometimes useful )discoveries.

A question to ask - ‘how could I do XXX differently?’

3. Synthesis

Where two or more existing ideas are combined into a third new idea.

This is one of my favorite ways of being creative. I like the challenge and possibilities that it can bring.

This is what happened that fateful day that someone wondered what would happen if they combined the idea of a theatre and a restaurant together - theatre restaurant.

It’s this Synthesis that I think we’re seeing more and more of in the blogosphere at present as people combine blogs with other types of websites (forums, video, audio, job boards, chat rooms etc).

A question to ask when entering into synthesis - ‘how could I take the benefits of XXX and combine them with the benefits of YYY’?

4. Revolution

Where a completely new idea that is markedly different from a previous one is developed.

An example that comes to mind is of a blogger that I recently met who used to be an email newsletter marketer. He found that his newsletter lists were becoming less and less effective so decided to move from newsletters to blogs - reinventing (and enlivening) his business in the process.

His goals didn’t really change but his methods did considerably.

A question to ask - instead of asking ‘how can I make XXX better’ one might ask - ‘what could I do instead of XXX to achieve the same goals?’

5. Changing Direction

Where there is a complete change of focus.

This is a fairly radical process for a business or individual to take and generally involves wiping a slate clean to rebuild from the ground up.

A question to ask in this case - ‘if we could start over - how would we do things differently?’

I’m sure there are other ways to be creative (and I’d be interested to hear your suggestions below) but the above five might make a good place to start.

Note - each of the above methods can be applied as bloggers on at least a couple of levels including during the writing of posts but also on a broader level as we think about our whole blogs and what we’re developing on a big picture level.

The Topic

This project’s topic is:

‘Top 5′

Your task with this project is to take the theme of ‘Top 5′ in any direction that you’d like to. I’ve chosen this theme because it should be adaptable to most types of blogs. For example a personal blogger could write about their top 5 favorite foods, a celebrity blogger could write about the top 5 things Paris will do when she gets to jail, a tech blogger could rate their top five gadgets of the year, a productivity blogger could write their top 5 ways to save 20 minutes a day etc.

Write it in any style you like, a rant, list, poem, essay, video, pictorial, haiku, podcast….. anything.

Be as creative as you can and take this in any direction you like. You’ll have a much better chance of getting your post noticed if it’s useful and/or interesting to readers and write something relevant to the topic of your blog.

Once you’ve written your post simply follow the process for participating that I’ve outlined below (please note - to be eligible for the gifts from our sponsors you need to follow the guidelines below).

The Prize

For this project I decided to experiment with having just the one larger prize instead of lots of smaller ones.

As a result at the end of the week I’ll be randomly choosing one lucky participant to win $1001 USD in Cash which has been kindly donated by Chitika. Over the week in each of the daily summary posts I’ll be sharing a reason that I think Chitika is great (and in doing so will come up with my own ‘Top 5′.

Thanks also to those others who offered to sponsor this week. As I mentioned - there were many offers and I really grappled with which one to choose.

The Other (Real) Reason to Participate

Prizes are great - but the real reason to get involved in this type of project is that it has the potential to find you some new readers, make some new blogging friends and put your blog out there.

Every time I run these projects I get emails from bloggers telling me that they:

  • had big traffic days
  • found new blogs that they just love
  • had their posts get to the top of digg and other bookmarking sites

Of course not every entry goes viral as a result of participating - but it’s been a beneficial experience for many previous participants as hundreds of bloggers take part.

The Key to Participating

One last thing before I tell you HOW to participate.

These projects work best when those participating don’t only submit posts of their own but when they read and interact with others who submit posts. Here’s how you can do this:

  • Read the submissions of others
  • Make friends with those you like the submissions of (comment, email - get to know them)
  • Link up to those who you resonate with (some bloggers write a top 5 or 10 list each day of the submissions that they like the best)
  • Bookmark, Stumble and Vote for those you resonate with

The people who get the most out of these projects are those who throw themselves deeply into them.

How To Participate

Here’s how to participate and put yourself in the running for the prize (and to get a little exposure for your blog along the way). Please read this as it has changed slightly since last time (this time submissions are not to be sent via my contact form but via another form - please read on):

Please note - one entry per person - and not per blog. Please only submit NEW posts.

1. Write a ‘top 5′ post

  • Be as creative as you’d like - take it in any direction you want as long as it relates to the topic.
  • Give your post a good title. Once all the posts are listed it’ll only be your title that sets it apart from others. It doesn’t have to have the words ‘review’ and or ‘preview’ in the title.
  • Feel free to write your post in your own first language.
  • Please consider putting a link back to this post on your post so that your readers know you’re participating. You don’t have to do this - but it’d be appreaciated to help grow the project.

2. Let us Know about your post

  • Once you’ve posted your post let me know about it by filling in ‘this form’ (now removed as the project is closed).
  • Please fill the form in accurately as the way you enter it is the way it’ll appear and due to the numbers participating I can’t edit it for everyone! The detail that you add will appear in the post (although I’ll be moderating out spam/offensive stuff).
  • Include your post title as you wish it to appear, the post’s URL (not your blog’s front page) and your name (or alias). All of this will be published.
  • To be eligable for the prize I need a valid email address - this will be kept secure and private ad will not be published.
  • Submissions must be received by me the the end of Thursday 10 May (as long as it’s still Thursday where you send it from I’ll accept it). If they come in after Thursday they won’t be included in the list and will not be in the running for the prize.

  • Probably the best part of the last group project was the amount of inter-linking I see happening between participating bloggers as a result of their posts. It’s obvious that people found new blogs through it and that the benefits of participating was way beyond getting a link from me but flowed on to a lot of new connections and links between other bloggers.

6. Prize

  • On Friday I’ll randomly select the participant to win the $1001 from Chitika and will post the winner at this point. The rest of us can muse over what could have been and then we’ll get ourselves ready for next months project.

WordPress Releases Stats Plugin

Yesterday WordPress released a plugin to allow hosted WordPress.org bloggers to use their WordPress.com Stats system on their blogs.
