The Million Dollar Homepage
Blog News
Want to see an enterprising online idea? The Million dollar Home Page is an attempt by one young business student to pay his university fees by selling advertising on a site - one pixel at a time. A pixel costs $1 and there are 1,000,000 of them up for grabs.
You have to buy them in 100 pixel blocks ($100 a pop) but people are buying them and he reported on his blog yesterday that he’s already paid for his 3 years of college fees completely.
Of course - a lot of those buying pixel are poker pages and affiliate programs by the looks of things - but he’s doing ok out of it and is reporting that each advertisers is getting good click-throughs for their money.

Selling homemade video is prerecorded media sold or rented for home viewing the sell homemade video. The term originates from the VHS and Betamax era, when the predominant medium was videotapes, but has carried over to optical disc formats such as DVD and Blu-ray with sell homemade videos. In a different usage, "home video" refers to selling homemade video recordings, also known as home movies and selling homemade videos.
The selling homemade videos business distributes films, television series, telefilms and other audiovisual media in the form of selling homemade video in various formats to the public. Selling homemade videos are either bought or rented, and then watched privately in purchasers' homes. Most theatrically released films are now released on digital media, both optical and download-based, replacing the largely obsolete videotape medium. The selling homemade video format remains popular in many countries, although DVDs are gradually losing popularity since the late 2010 and early 2020s, when streaming media became mainstream. This proves two things:
1- You just need a good concept to make money on the Internet.
2- Companies are willing to bite into the mostly any good concept to get some exposure.

All I have to say after reading that is:
“Wish I had thought of that”
It’s a really good, original idea to get him through college. I’m going to have to go brainstorm ideas to get me through college and to Russia.
I’m just amazed that people went for it. Wow.

LOL!! This made for a good laugh this evening. Thanks for the post; I love to use examples like this for case studies.
One must give credit where credit is due. This exact marketing gimmick will lose its effect in the not so distant future as the traffic generated from the “gawk and awe” effect wears away, and people lose interest in viewing and clicking through a page of nothing but 1,000,000 pixels of advertising. However, kudos to an inspired idea and to those advertisers who have seen insightful enough to recognize the opportunity for some large traffic spikes for as little as $100 to start.
I say this with some admiration as I have been in the marketing/advertising/pr field for many years. More often than not things like this are done in an underhanded and shady way, that ends up being more of a fraudulent scam than a win-win. However, this young business student did it honestly and above board, a “what you see is what you get” approach. I also recognize the potential to morph this from a *flux of cash fad opportunity* into a steady, consistent income down the road, if handled correctly. I will add this to my watch list, as I am curious to see where it goes from here.

Hehe, what a smart idea - gimmicky as hell but it’s working. Crazy publicity stunts still do work in these cynical times … way to go and milk it for all it’s worth I say … as it won’t last long - 2 things: a thousand others will try the same thing and the buzz of this will soon lose its effect.

Thought I’d weigh in with my own attempt: http://www.milliondollarmosaic.com. As an artist, I created a Pop Art inspired soup can where advertisers buy part of the mosaic. Pop Art often used advertisers as its raw material. In this mosaic, I give Pop Art back to the advertiser with a permanent link and the possibility of exhibiting in a gallery, with each pixel blown up onto a huge canvas.

The Chinese Million Dollar Homepage?????
http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/ has been so successful that it catches eyes of not only English speakers but also people of other nations.
A Million Dollar Homepage in Chinese( http://www.1baiwan.com/ ) was launched last week, which grows so fast that it was listed on Alexa’s Mover & Shakers (Chinese website) after only one week, whose traffic rank rise up by 4,000%. ( http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/movers_shakers?lang=zh_gb2312 )
Even Alexa noticed this Chinese “copycat”, and mentioned its existence.( http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/movers_shakers?lang=en )
The Chinese Million Dollar Homepage is designed particularly for Chinese visitors and their block/grid (13×13 pixels) is also larger than the Million Dollar Homepage (10×10 pixels) as Chinese Characters are larger than English letters. On the other hand, the price is set for local market, RMB(Chinese Dollar)100 for each, each is a lot more affordable than US$100.
According to a Chinese blogger, the Chinese Million Dollar Homepage has been very hot among Chinese bloggers, and it’s been also reported by several major professional Chinese ICPs. And the owners wrote on their blog that, the traffic had grown so fast that they had to purchase their own server only 5 days after it launched.
The Chinese Million Dollar Homepage also has an English ntroduction page( http://www.1baiwan.com/EngIntro.html ), which promotes itself as a cost-effective way of reaching Chinese market, in which 60 million people surf Internet. It accepts payment in US$ via Paypal and US$15 per block for people who are not able to pay RMB(Chinese Dollar).
But the Chinese culture is quite different from the Western culture, will it succeed as the English one? Let’s see.

I actually thought of doing something a lot like this several years ago, but I chose not to do anything about it, so I totally respect Alex for doing this. I’ve put together my own “spinoff” site with a twist - I am trying to raise money for a new house, and the way my ad spaces work is a little different. I acknowledge Alex for paving the way for this new genre of page. When I sell a few more ad spaces, I am going to buy a 30×30 ad on Alex’s page in appreciation.
My site is called “The Friendly Neighborhood Home Page.”

I decided to drop my spinoff site. Refunds were issued. There are just too many people jumping on the bandwagon, and I didn’t want to be locked into hosting a mostly empty page for 5 years. It was really just something I was testing the waters with. It turns out that the water is getting too crowded with sharks.

Aah okay so me and everyone else above have jumped on the bandwagon - its like a gold rush hehe.. like a mini version of the.com boom.. I remember this used to be a bit what it was like back then.. the whole idea of sitting back and watching the money roll in off the net. I remember there were websites based on the business model of selling advertising in ways like this (banner ads though) but i havent heard of anyone making this much money from it. During the 2000 olympics I was involved in a site that for the short period of the games drew some huge traffic and they sold about $3K in ad space.. which sounded good until the hosting bill arrived which was $4K due to the excess bandwidth used. Nowdays bandwidth is so much cheaper it could work. okay well so I went and made one of these pixel selling sites too.. http://www.moneytotem.com - okay after seeing the million dollar homepage and then spending 3 hours bashing my head into the wall screaming whyyyy didn’t I think of that?? well the best that popped out of my beer soaked brain was throw in some flash and a bit of a theme a little bit of code trickery to get the totem to speak the ads and have it all fit on a typical 1024×768 screen..
ps for everyone trying to score some links to their pixel pages a few directories have sprung up like www.thepixelwars.com Cheers!

I like to think it’s a little second generation because I’ve added something - cows…
Now, when you click the links on the homepage you don’t just get taken directly through to the advertised site, you also get a cow! Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. You can save or print the cows, collect all the different varieties and play them off together in various cow wars…

What do you think about these new web sites selling pixels? I’ve just put mine online at Bloc de pub, in french, and i’m trying to promote it on the Web. And I also make it cheaper, only 10 euros for a bloc of 10×10 pixels, to allow more people to advertise on it (like blogs or personnal web site). I just think 100$ for a bloc (what the other sites are doing) is quite expensive for an individual who has his own personnal web site !
Do you think this can of web site can last for a long time or it’s juste a temporary web site ?

All these copy-cats, its amazing. I’ve done my own version of Alex Tew’s Million Dollar homeppage - but I guess you’d have to call it a copy-cow. It’s only $0.50 to advertise, and I think its pretty cool
I’ve only just started the page, and so am looking to drum up some interest. Take a look at http://www.milliondollarcowpage.com.

Staring from today FaceTalks.com (http://facetalks.com) is completely FREE.
You can choose a place on our homepage and put there a photo of yours, a description and a link to your website completely for free.
The only thing we ask is that you comply with our philosophy, i.e. to show yourself, not just your logo. You can superimpose a little logo to your image if you want, but what is important is that the message comes from you!
You image will be online for 180 days, then your cell will be freed again.
To increase your visibility we maintain a list of popular faces, according to the views per day rate they receive.
We hope you like our work.

I have to admit that I was a little jealous about Alex Tew’s success. I then made the decision to create my own concept called http://www.ebizproject.com launched in the hopes to attract advertisers who first believe that online advertising will play a key role moving forward, as well as others who want to have a little piece of Internet history in the making.
I only started it a couple of days ago and I already have 4 major sponsers (who’s ads are still in the process of completing). Pretty wild - and I might be able to payoff my kids college once they go!

I watched this site from almost the beginning. It is amazing that a young kid like Alex can do almost every step in the process right, including hiring a US publicist to promote for him.
So what’s next? A new idea in www.millionfans.com wants to get million fans in addition to million dollars by using digital photo ads. Should be interesting.

A funny copy of the million dollar website has emerged. The Million Dollar Bush site allows you to purchase advertising pixels to cover a picture of Geroge W Bush, Cover the lies & Advertise.
As a gay rights activist and small business owner and anti bush advocate, I advertised on their website. I suggest you inquire with them. I think it is funny and sends a message to Bush and also gives $100,000 to charity.

While the world is awaiting for the dust to settle on the direction of pixel advertisement, I am seeing a great protential in using it as a vehicle for site promotion.
Picture tells a thousand words Why do web browser took over text-based lynx and multimedia-messaging-service(mms) replacing short-messaging-service(sms)? Its all because of graphics and we human are visual being. Pixel Advert adds another dimension to your content portal/blog where visitors can view all your link partners in a graphical form. Whilst the old method of link exchange promotes only search engines’ link popularity ranking, Pixel Ads may actually generates human outbound traffic from site visitors.
Having said that, I am now experimenting new site promotion via Free Pixel Ad For Site Promotion. We’ll will wait and see if this can eventually take off and become future trend of site promotion strategy.

News from www.millionairepixels.co.uk
‘a Devon business with global ambition’
Date: Monday 16 January surf zone.
Australia asks Devon Designer for Help
Devon internet businessman and web designer Alan Wheeler has launched an innovative web advertising service which has already attracted an international company to sign up.
Bovey Tracey based Mr Wheeler has also been asked by Australian charity ‘Hope for Children’ to help them design and set up a similar web-based advertising service.
His web-service www.millionairepixels.co.uk enables businesses to buy a square of pixels, on the web page. Customers click on the coloured pixels and are immediately transported to the advertiser’s web site.
With each block of 100 pixels costing just £60 (60p per unit) it is, believes Mr Wheeler, one of the best value advertising and promotion options for businesses of all sizes and a potentially valuable boost to tourism related services.
And, in the longer term, advertisers could end up bidding for space on what is being described as internet ‘real estate’.
Mr Wheeler, aged 42, said “It’s a quick and easy way for people to find a service or firm and it also gives competitive advantage to the businesses because, with the millions of web sites available, this will draw potential customers to them much more easily.”
“Without a doubt there are people globally willing to pay for quite gimmicky advertising solutions. The internet is a fast moving place with over eight million web pages added on a daily basis. For a website to stand out and generate sales it needs to stand out from the rest,” he added
Last autumn university student Alex Tew set up the Million Dollar site and since then has been overwhelmed by the success of a venture intended to raise enough money to pay for his way through university.
Alan Wheeler’s www.millionairepixels.co.uk is, he says, the next big step in the concept because, in effect, businesses are ‘leasing’ virtual real estate on the web to promote their businesses.
Launched just two weeks ago, www.millionairepixels.co.uk has already won the backing of international business Optis Europe Ltd, an operations management company, which is using the site to promote its business.
With more customers advertising it is, says Mr Wheeler, inevitable that like real property, some of the pixels on his site will become increasingly valuable for their ‘owners’ as more business is generated.
However, the last 1200 pixels, or advertising blocks, will eventually be auctioned off in support of the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, said Mr Wheeler.
Ends…

I like what Alex did on his homepage, but I do not like how hard it is too see the smaller ads on his homepage. That is why I loved this one webpage when I came across it called Banners Bring Business at http://www.bannersbringbusiness.com They try to solve the problem of smaller 10×10 blocks by selling 88×31 blocks for the same price of $100. It is a neat spin off of a great idea.

I bought the big target in the centre of the MDHP, the daily response has been absolutely phenomenal (a peak of 5000 unique visitors a day). With regards to copycat sites - I am looking for something with even 10% of the initiative, to no avail - any ideas???

the reason that some of these sites will succeed and other will just vanish is quite simple.
take www.thesixmilliondollarpage.com a u.s. based website which has a huge publicity machine backing them.
they’ll be appearing on television, radio and in print telling their story.
certainly, this is already driving traffic to www.thesixmilliondollarpage.com

i saw the two guys from www.thesixmilliondollarpage.com on abc news last week — and they are amazing.
if anybody will succeed in selling pixels, these two young guys will.
first, they’re media savvy.
second, they have a great website at www.thesixmilliondollarpage.com
third, they’d send out smoke signals to generate traffic to their site. they probably generated more traffic to their site in one week from a national magazine story to a national television spot than anybody else.
my money is on www.thesixmilliondollarpage.com
they’re just too smart and they’re going to be everywhere.

So many have copied the original and arent getting anywhere - because it’s not original.
If you want to innovate and be successfu you have to up the game to the next level.
After seeing the original MDHP i came up with an idea in January and implemented it in Feb. Sicne then i’ve been more successfu than i’d hoped for.
I’ve created the worlds first ever tactical advertising game, the first time a crossword has been used for advertising and the worlds first interActive pixel advertising-style site. And it’s working enough for me. Alex just opened my eyes to an idea i never had before, i woudn’t call it copying, not at all - it’s developing it to the next generation.

I believe that Alex’s site still generates some indirect value for advertisers at least by improving their visibility in search engines. It has a PageRank of 7 and many still continue to add links to it (by the way, this article has just added one link). So, getting the link from website with such a high PageRank for as low as 1$ it is clearly a reasonable investment.
Good luck to all the copycats :)

I just launched a totally unique project that is slightly based on the milliondollarhomepage. But it’s original to that and I think, more fun :)
It’s called www.awesomemillion.com.
Essentially, for $1, a user gets a custom designed webpage at Username.isReallyAwesome.com. Examples here:

So we’re really targeting fun here. It’s made for people to laugh, and taunt their friends and put smiles on their faces. But, we consider it a unique and original idea and we’re trying to get some media attention (of course, right?).
We have what we believe to be a strong story. Our press page:
